On the 30th of April 2016,
Sakura College’s Exco of Discipline and Safety organized a seminar known as ‘Seminar
Keselamatan Kampus’ or Campus Safety Seminar. The guest speaker for this event
is Mr. Rajan Thangaveloo. This event was held at Center of Teaching Facilities
1 (CTF1).
The seminar started with the arrival
of the guest speaker, around 9.30 a.m, followed by the usual singing of UNIMAS’s
and Sakura College anthem. After everyone was seated, the MC began a short
introduction of the guest speaker. Mr Rajan Thangaveloo is a lecturer of the
Faculty of Resource Science and Technology (FRST) since 2008. He is also the
Deputy Superintendant of Police (DSP) of the Kor Suksis Unimas since 2014.
Known for his friendliness and charm, he was immediately recognized by some of
his students during the event.
He was then invited up to the stage
to give his talk. He began his talk by expressing his wish to organize a similar
kind of talk to the whole of UNIMAS rather than to just individual residential
colleges as he felt that the topic of safety is important to everyone. He explained
that due to the large campus size and the huge population of people residing in
the university, awareness for personal safety should be further emphasized as
there are many kinds of threat present be it physically, subversively, or due
to natural disasters.
Mr Rajan stressed that if students
remain ignorant in regards of their own personal safety, there are many
negative consequences, one of which that their very own lives might be in grave
danger. He then proceeded to tell personal stories and cases that have occurred
in real life in UNIMAS. One of them is about two students who were attacked on
their way home to their college, in which several unidentified men tailed them
using their motorcycles and threatened them to hand over their phones. Fearing
for their safety, the students were forced to give up their belongings, and the
men were not caught until this day.
He also told stories of how the Royal
Malaysian Police were not only in service to their own country, but also to
neighbouring ones, such as Thailand. He mentioned how he is now in process of
introducing a new safety program to UNIMAS, known as 3K (Kepolisan, Komuniti
dan Kampus). The project is now in pipeline and it involves the cooperation of
the Student Affairs Division, Kor Suksis UNIMAS, and the local police in order
to maintain the safety of the campus and its surrounding areas.
After a short Q&A session, the
event came to a close around 11.15 a.m. with the head of Sakura College’s
Student Council, Wan Nur Azliza, handing over a small souvenir to the guest
speaker.
