DECEMBER 2019, SATURDAY - Sakura Entrepreneurship Committee has
organized a motivational talk “Money Maker, Extra Income” on how to earn extra
money as a university student. The event was started with student registration at
8.30 a.m. that took placed at Bilik
Pembelajaran 3, CTF1.
The talk was
delivered by Associate Professor Dr. Dayang Affizzah Binti Awang Marikan which
is a Head Cluster of Organizational Dynamics (Economics), Faculty Economics and
Business, UNIMAS. She was born in Kuching, Sarawak and loves to involve in
business since her undergraduate study. She started to be a workaholic in
business during her master's study at University Putra Malaysia as she was
started her Muslimah clothes business and able to earn ten thousand. Dr. Dayang
completed her PhD dissertation in 2011 at the University of Southampton, United
Kingdom, entitled, "Empirical Studies of Convergence in Income,
Productivity, and Competitiveness: The Experience of Asian Economies". When
she was in the United Kingdom, making money had become her habit.
Dr. Dayang
started the introduction of the young entrepreneur with the description of
university student life as she showed the audience the vlog about student daily
routine. Based on the vlog, she told us that student life would be boring if we
always do the same thing daily; wake up, study, eat, sleep and repeat it to the
next day. Life is fun so why not we try to create something new that can
benefit us in the future, for example making business.
Based on the
recent research according to Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation survey,
9 out of 10 students are working as part-time while studying, mostly because
they need the additional money to cover their student expenses include
accommodation, education resources, and assignment-related materials,
transportation as well as monthly bills and lifestyle costs. It is good to make
money actually, but we must consider the top priority which is study as we are
still a student.
“You must remember who you
are. You are a student and you’re still a student so don’t ever skip the class
for work.” – Dr. Dayang
However, there
are pros and cons to earning extra income as a student. Dr. Dayang who is
expertise in Economic Development and Growth strictly told that, as long as you
are a student, you need to attend the class. Don't ever miss the class or
appointment with a supervisor just because you are busy with part-time work.
This kind of attitude irritates her a lot. We must be able to manage our time
between work and study. Don't let the work affect the studies because, in the
end, you will suffer. It's will lead to stress and negative academic outcome.
Working while in university might hurt students more than it helps. There is a
solution for a student to gain money easier which one of them is through a
mobile application such as Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, and blogs. It is
time-consuming as nowadays everything is at your fingertips.
Dr. Dayang shares a few
financial management tips for the student as following:
1. Choose the food place wisely
2. Saving is necessary
3. Shopping wisely
4. Differentiate between the
wants and needs
5. Travel as a backpacker way
There are example of startup
and business for university student:
1. Printing service
2. On-campus delivery service
3. Car rental service
4. Top up service
5. Run errands or deliver food
6. Online dropship
7. Collect other students dirty
laundry and take it to the launderette for a markup
8. Dorm cleaning service
9. Hamper service
10. Proofreader
11. Prom Makeup
12. Barber service
13. Blogging or YouTube personality
Before Dr.
Dayang end her talk session, she showed the audience many video about business
