Miftah al-Bait 7.0

On 17th February 2017, Sakura College was the host to a very accomplished guest speaker, a Mdm. Samsiah Jayos, in conjunction with the Miftah al Bait 7.0 event. Mdm. Samsiah Jayos is currently a Senior Lecturer of the Faculty of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development as well as a Professional Counselor with the Centre of Student Development, UNIMAS. Miftah al Bait has for the past few years been the platform for motivating the students whom attended the event. The most recent one had a sharing session with the title “Excellence Without Soul”. The Program Director, a Ms. Sitti Aishah binti Najamudin mentioned during the event that she hoped that the participants chose to attend the event with the right intentions. Ms. Sitti Aishah further expressed her hopes that through attending Miftah al Bait, students would be able to achieve greater in this semester than the one before and be prepared for the challenges of the current semester.

Mdm. Samsiah Jayos explained that her sharing would be mainly about managing emotions and their role in achieving excellence. She stated that stress is very important as it is one of the forces driving humanity to excellence. However, she also expressed that overwhelming stress is not a good thing. Therefore, she urged students to share their problems if there are any to whomever they trust such as good friends.

She gave an expose on the symptoms of emotional disturbance by several categories such as the physiology and psychology. Physically, the symptoms may include headache, insomnia and loss of appetite. Psychologically, the symptoms may be suicidal thoughts, nightmares and others. She advised students to not give up even if numerous challenges may come. She then gave several ways to handle emotional disturbances. One of them is to discover the underlying or actual problem and gauge individual’s capability in resolving it. If students found themselves unable to solve it on their own, they are encouraged to seek help from friends, family and even professional help. Seeking professional help (e.g counselling and therapy) should not be a stigma as everyone faced problems.

Another important tip that Mdm. Samsiah Jayos gave to students is to have planned their daily life according to three aspects that is academic, co-curriculum and personal, placing upon each tasks their appropriate priority and ensuring each completed as planned as a disruption to any of the three aspects will induce unnecessary stress.

Before she ended her sharing, she told the students to not leave their prayers, seek blessings from their parents and again, she reminded the students to share their problems if they have any. Throughout the talk, she also showed several videos. Among those is an inspirational and motivational regarding Nick Vujic, a renowned motivational speaker with the slogan “Attitude is altitude”, whose philosophy is about personal outlook or attitude and how they should influence an individual’s life.

After the talk, the guest speaker, Mdm. Samsiah Jayos, was a presented a small gift of appreciation by the Principal, Ms. Siti Nor Ain binti Haji Musa while accompanied by the Program Director, Ms. Sitti Aishah. There was also a group photo at the end of the event. The event was also attended by the two fellows of Sakura College, that are, Ms. Noorfarida binti Saini and Dr. Hasmaliana binti Abdul Manas.
