BOLLYWOOD NIGHT

13th October 2019, Sunday – Kolej Sakura’s celebrated its first ever Diwali during “Sakura Bollywood Night” handled by the Discipline and Protocol Exco. The word Diwali means “row of lights” which is why people who celebrated this always decorate their home with oil lamps called diyas. This celebration is not complete without kolam.

On the Sunday morning starting at 8 am, the kolam was drawn and decorated with rice flour led by the Indian students in Kolej Sakura. It was located at the ground floor of Blok B. Kolams are drawn in order to invite ants, birds and other small creatures to eat it and is also to welcome the Goddess of Prosperity, Lakshmi. This activity is named Let’s Art, ended on the afternoon, 12 p.m.

All apartments participating in this program must decorate their apartment according to the Diwali theme because there will be an Open House activity. Two apartments will be combined, and they will cooperate to decorate one of the houses. They will be serving foods for those who came to their house. The students also dressed up nicely according to the theme, Diwali which makes the event unique compared to others. Photobooth sections were available in all the apartments where people can capture their memories for that night.

Miss Ain and Miss Farida went to every apartment to evaluate their creativities. Some apartments even prepared games for Miss Ain and Miss Farida in order to make the event much livelier. While visiting the apartments, Miss Ain and Miss Farida took the chance to get to know the students better, asking how they are doing and so on. The purpose of this event was not just to celebrate Diwali, but to also brings the students together. In the near future, hoping that more event like this can be organized in order to make life in Kolej Sakura more exciting.

MONEY MAKER, EXTRA INCOME

14 DECEMBER 2019, SATURDAY -   Sakura Entrepreneurship Committee has organized a motivational talk “Money Maker, Extra Income” on how to earn extra money as a university student. The event was started with student registration at 8.30 a.m. that took placed at Bilik Pembelajaran 3, CTF1.

The talk was delivered by Associate Professor Dr. Dayang Affizzah Binti Awang Marikan which is a Head Cluster of Organizational Dynamics (Economics), Faculty Economics and Business, UNIMAS. She was born in Kuching, Sarawak and loves to involve in business since her undergraduate study. She started to be a workaholic in business during her master's study at University Putra Malaysia as she was started her Muslimah clothes business and able to earn ten thousand. Dr. Dayang completed her PhD dissertation in 2011 at the University of Southampton, United Kingdom, entitled, "Empirical Studies of Convergence in Income, Productivity, and Competitiveness: The Experience of Asian Economies". When she was in the United Kingdom, making money had become her habit.

Dr. Dayang started the introduction of the young entrepreneur with the description of university student life as she showed the audience the vlog about student daily routine. Based on the vlog, she told us that student life would be boring if we always do the same thing daily; wake up, study, eat, sleep and repeat it to the next day. Life is fun so why not we try to create something new that can benefit us in the future, for example making business.

Based on the recent research according to Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation survey, 9 out of 10 students are working as part-time while studying, mostly because they need the additional money to cover their student expenses include accommodation, education resources, and assignment-related materials, transportation as well as monthly bills and lifestyle costs. It is good to make money actually, but we must consider the top priority which is study as we are still a student.

“You must remember who you are. You are a student and you’re still a student so don’t ever skip the class for work.” – Dr. Dayang

However, there are pros and cons to earning extra income as a student. Dr. Dayang who is expertise in Economic Development and Growth strictly told that, as long as you are a student, you need to attend the class. Don't ever miss the class or appointment with a supervisor just because you are busy with part-time work. This kind of attitude irritates her a lot. We must be able to manage our time between work and study. Don't let the work affect the studies because, in the end, you will suffer. It's will lead to stress and negative academic outcome. Working while in university might hurt students more than it helps. There is a solution for a student to gain money easier which one of them is through a mobile application such as Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, and blogs. It is time-consuming as nowadays everything is at your fingertips.

Dr. Dayang shares a few financial management tips for the student as following:

1. Choose the food place wisely
2. Saving is necessary
3. Shopping wisely
4. Differentiate between the wants and needs
5. Travel as a backpacker way

There are example of startup and business for university student:

1. Printing service
2. On-campus delivery service
3. Car rental service
4. Top up service
5. Run errands or deliver food
6. Online dropship
7. Collect other students dirty laundry and take it to the launderette for a markup
8. Dorm cleaning service
9. Hamper service
10. Proofreader
11. Prom Makeup
12. Barber service
13. Blogging or YouTube personality

Before Dr. Dayang end her talk session, she showed the audience many video about business and budget saving. The two videos that successfully make the audience burst of laughter which is video of Grab service and food delivery. The link of the video as provided below.

1. Types Of Grab Passengers
2. How People React To Food Deliveries

The “Money Maker, Extra Income” event concluded with a presentation of appreciation gift to Dr. Dayang Affizzah Binti Awang Marikan by program director, Alisha Cardelynna Anak Kiang and her assistant, Phuah Yee Ling. Memorial pictures with Dr. Dayang were taken. Council disperse and Dr. Dayang is invited for lunch.

SIK LAMAK GIK EXAM!

“Oh no! We have one more week till final exam!”
“I haven’t studied for my final exam, I’m doomed!”

These are the words commonly uttered by university students when final exam is just around the corner. All the burden and worries later will lead them to a condition we called “Stress”. Therefore, the Exco of Pembangunan Sahsiah of Kolej Sakura organized a motivational talk on 7 December 2019, “Sik Lamak Gik Exam” on how to prepare for the final exam. “Sik Lamak Gik Exam” means examination is just around the corner in local Sarawak language. As quoted by Benjamin Franklin, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail” which means that we need to plan for our future instead of going with the flow as practiced by most students nowadays.

The students from Kolej Sakura registered at 8:00 a.m that took place in Bilik Seminar 3, CTF1. In order to keep the participants active during the talk, the activity committee conduct an exercise session.

This talk was presented by a teacher from SMK Semerah Padi, Mr. Hj Yasmin bin Hashim@Yasin. He is from Kelantan but teaches in Sarawak since 1995 where he first started teaching at SMK Kalaka. Mr. Hj Yasmin informed that this may be the first and last talk he did for Kolej Sakura as he is returning to Kelantan next year.

He talked about so many new things that a lot of participants never heard of before. One of the most exciting tips that he shared was the exercise for the heart. He also shared on how to fight sleepiness during class especially the early morning class. The technique that he recommends is 8:4:8 which means breathe in through the nose slowly for 8 seconds, then hold your breath for 4 seconds and slowly breathe out through the mouth for 8 seconds. There were some quotes and prayers for the Muslims that the speaker mentions to help the participants in their study.

Mr. Hj Yasmin also gave some advices on how to cope with stress.
1.     Always smile before study – as smiling makes the muscles on our face to relax and it sets a good mindset before we study.
2.     Pray – There is no better listener other than God
3.     Exercise – Helps us to stay healthy and our mind to stay active
4.     Be grateful – There are those on other parts of the world doesn’t have what we have
5.     Eat healthy – What we eat is important as it affects our health. For example, eat raisins every morning

Upon the end of the talk, the participants were given a small paper for them to fill it with their goals and how they want to achieve it during the activity “Positive Vibe On!”. Two participants were chosen randomly to share what they wrote. The motivational talk overall was a success as the participants learnt something new and they are much more determined. The refreshing talk by Mr. Hj Yasmin was concluded with presentation of tokens of appreciation to the speaker and photography session.
