Photography: Shoot Out

14th April, the Exco of Publicity and Promotion organized Photography: Shoot Out with the special appearance of Mr Bernard Bong from Bernard Bong Photography. The programme was divided into two sessions; in the morning at Waterfront, Kuching and in the afternoon at Dewan Kristal, HEPA.
The morning session was a practical experience for the participants in capturing photos from two categories; street and scenery. The participants had the freedom to move around and capture any scene that they desire with the instruction to regroup at an appointed time. Once everyone had regrouped, everyone moved to the bus that transported them back to UNIMAS.
Immediately after disembarking, participants were reminded to attend the afternoon session for a talk on photography by Mr Bernard Bong and to submit a single photo for each category for the chance to win some prizes as well as the opportunity to be critiqued by a professional photographer.
In his talk, Mr Bernard gave several tips and advices for aspiring photographer; that is, to take photos regularly and to understand the camera being used. The important criterion to be remembered by photographers about their cameras are aperture, shutter-speed and ISO speed. Aperture for the amount of light that enters the camera, shutter-speed for how fast can the motion be captured to reduce motion blurs, and ISO speed for noise adjustment.
In taking landscape or scenery photos, Mr Bernard’s tips were to ensure there is no object that is plain white in colour in the background as the human eye has the tendency to see the white object first and to check the direction of the light such as the sun rays. He had also talked about dividing the frame into 9 equal squares or grids and placing the important element along the line. Then, regarding lines, where the elements of the photo were arranged in a line such as the scene of stalls at the market. Reflection, cropping and changing angles or perspectives were also explained. His final advice before the Q&A is to not be afraid to experiment. One of the participants asked of raw photo and JPEG photo which is more suitable to which Mr Bernard recommends raw photo as it has more depth compared to JPEG photo.
Before the winner of each category was announced, participants’ artwork was displayed and commented upon by Mr Bernard. The street photography category was won by Ms Juliana Anak Mullen whereas the scenery was won by Mr Muhamad Syairie Bin Jubilin. Mr Bernard was then presented with a small gift of appreciation from the Programme Director, Ms Siti Hanis Syafiqah Binti Hamid.
