February 2020, Wednesday – “Dapur Tradisi” is a program where the
participants were taught on how to cook traditional delicacies like kuih ketayap and ambuyat. In order to teach the students properly, a teacher who
also runs business selling desserts through social media like Instagram. The
participants are allowed to scan the QR code before the event starts, which was
on 2 o’clock in the evening.
Kuih ketayap is a green coloured wrap
with sweetened grated coconut fillings. It is a type of snack that is usually
consumed for tea time. The ingredients used for it are wheat flour, grated coconuts, pandan leaves and others. The teacher gave
guides and instructions whereby all other participants take turn to try
preparing it. Each and every one of the participant got to try doing it themselves
and taste their own products.
Ambuyat on the other hand is a snack
made from sago flour. The flour is mixed with hot boiling water and needed to
be stirred continuously and vigorously until it turns transparent and became
sticky. This ambuyat is best eaten
with foods like sambal belacan and
others of the same taste. Participants took turn to stir the ambuyat and then eat it with the sambal that the teacher brought.
This
kind of activity is very good in order to introduce some of our Malaysian traditional
foods to those who had never ate it or prepared it. Hopefully in the future,
more activities like this are able to be carried out to introduce our Malaysian
culture to others who had never experienced it.
