Who’s At Fault?: HealthTalk

In conjunction with Who’s at Fault which is organized by Sakura College’ ‘Exco Pembangunan Sahsiah’ (Personality Development Exco), a health talk was held on the 19th May 2017 with Dr Khairul Hafidz as the guest speaker. He is the author of the ‘Pena and Picagari’ and several other notable works, and is well-known on Twitter. The topic of the talk was pornography and its side-effects. This event was an inter-college event so students from other colleges were also invited to join. It was held at CTF1, DK.

The talk began at around 8.30 p.m. with ‘Negaraku’ and a prayer recitation. After that, the emcee made a brief introduction of Dr Khairul Hafidz. During the whole talk, he had a very welcoming presence as he even took pictures of the audience during his time on the stage. He started his talk by defining the different perceptions of pornography. He stated that exposure to pornography mainly affects the brain by releasing different types of hormones. The main culprit which encourages porn addiction is dopamine, which is a type of hormone which is released as a ‘reward’ when a want is fulfilled, giving the person a sense of satisfaction.

Dr Khairul mentioned physical side-effects of porn addiction such as lack of sex drive, erectile dysfunction, delayed or premature ejaculation, and many others. He also stated that porn addiction may also negatively affect relationships especially among couples if the porn user is too entranced with the fantasy he or she gained from watching too much porn. He showed several videos which discuss the side-effects of pornography addiction to prove his points.

Afterwards, a Question&Answer session is open to the audience. Dr Khairul answered several questions concerning the different types of effects of pornography addiction which were not addressed during the talk. The session ended after several questions have been addressed and answered. Then, Cik Siti Nor Ain, Sakura College’s principal, was invited to the stage to hand a token of appreciation to Dr Khairul.

The talk came to a close at around 11 p.m. with a group photo of the audience with Dr Khairul Hafidz. The students were also invited to buy some of his books at the registration counter.
