SIK LAMAK GIK EXAM!

“Oh no! We have one more week till final exam!”
“I haven’t studied for my final exam, I’m doomed!”

These are the words commonly uttered by university students when final exam is just around the corner. All the burden and worries later will lead them to a condition we called “Stress”. Therefore, the Exco of Pembangunan Sahsiah of Kolej Sakura organized a motivational talk on 7 December 2019, “Sik Lamak Gik Exam” on how to prepare for the final exam. “Sik Lamak Gik Exam” means examination is just around the corner in local Sarawak language. As quoted by Benjamin Franklin, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail” which means that we need to plan for our future instead of going with the flow as practiced by most students nowadays.

The students from Kolej Sakura registered at 8:00 a.m that took place in Bilik Seminar 3, CTF1. In order to keep the participants active during the talk, the activity committee conduct an exercise session.

This talk was presented by a teacher from SMK Semerah Padi, Mr. Hj Yasmin bin Hashim@Yasin. He is from Kelantan but teaches in Sarawak since 1995 where he first started teaching at SMK Kalaka. Mr. Hj Yasmin informed that this may be the first and last talk he did for Kolej Sakura as he is returning to Kelantan next year.

He talked about so many new things that a lot of participants never heard of before. One of the most exciting tips that he shared was the exercise for the heart. He also shared on how to fight sleepiness during class especially the early morning class. The technique that he recommends is 8:4:8 which means breathe in through the nose slowly for 8 seconds, then hold your breath for 4 seconds and slowly breathe out through the mouth for 8 seconds. There were some quotes and prayers for the Muslims that the speaker mentions to help the participants in their study.

Mr. Hj Yasmin also gave some advices on how to cope with stress.
1.     Always smile before study – as smiling makes the muscles on our face to relax and it sets a good mindset before we study.
2.     Pray – There is no better listener other than God
3.     Exercise – Helps us to stay healthy and our mind to stay active
4.     Be grateful – There are those on other parts of the world doesn’t have what we have
5.     Eat healthy – What we eat is important as it affects our health. For example, eat raisins every morning

Upon the end of the talk, the participants were given a small paper for them to fill it with their goals and how they want to achieve it during the activity “Positive Vibe On!”. Two participants were chosen randomly to share what they wrote. The motivational talk overall was a success as the participants learnt something new and they are much more determined. The refreshing talk by Mr. Hj Yasmin was concluded with presentation of tokens of appreciation to the speaker and photography session.
